Dancer in the Dark - The Producers 2
Lars Von Trier reminds me a lot of Max Bialystock – "I picked the wrong play, the wrong director, the wrong cast. Where did I go right?" Despite being almost all wrong Dancer in the Dark somehow works, and I can hardly say why. The same applied to Breaking the Waves and The Idiots.
I think Von Trier is a hypocrite – he advocates the Dogme manifesto which suggests directors should remain inconspicuous and then he embeds the title of the film inside the gigantic letters spelling his own name! I think he's the sort of guy who would put his shoulder out patting himself on the back.
Regardless of Von Trier's rampant pomposity, Dancer in the Dark, despite its coarse presentation and sometimes ugly aesthetic, becomes quite an affecting experience in which all the requisite emotions are assembled successfully. Bjork is good, so too is the rest of the cast and the musical numbers are originally conceived.
Catherine Deneuve - in better times....
